Share your Statements; Improve Access to Education Financing

We are trying to improve access to education financing in Africa. To do this well we need to be able to determine one’s family income from their Mpesa inflows and outflows. This allows us to prioritise financing to students from families with the lowest income. By submitting your statements, you’ll allow us to build a model that can accurately predict one’s income from one’s inflows and outflows (at least we hope). In turn, we’ll share salary reports for you to benchmark your income quarterly based our data from our income-share beneficiaries.

Note that we’ll ANONYMISE every single personal identification information from your email to all personal transactional details in your statements immediately on submission using hash functions. After scraping the data, we’ll delete your statement so that we maintain extreme privacy with zero chance of personal data breaches/exploitation. We’ll make our scraping code open-source for you to vet this if you are technical enough.

Determine your gross annual earned income

Your gross annual income is the sum of all your monthly earnings across a year. This could be from your salary, from contractual work, or from self-employment. However, this does NOT include income from investments (capital gains), gambling/betting, or inheritance (we do not consider that earned income). Take your time to calculate your income well, we are not KRA so you do not have to hide anything. We also can’t attribute any entry to you on submission given our focus on anonymity and personal data deletion.

How to get your Mpesa Statements

Dial *334# from your M-PESA registered line. Select option 7 – My Account. Select option 1 – M-PESA Statement >> request your full statement >> Select option 8 – Specific period. For the period, Mpesa limits you to statements within the last two years. Therefore enter 01062021 as the date from (That means 1st June 2021). Then enter 31122022 as the date to (That means 31st Dec 2022).

Mpesa will send your statements (PDF) to your confirmed email. Upload this below. They’ll also share a 6-digit statement access code. Enter this below. Note that the access code is NOT your password and you should NOT share your Mpesa password with anyone anyway.
